Visitor numbers

As our national parks are freely accessible, no precise numbers of visitors can be determined, of course. The figures that can be recorded refer to the participants in excursions and guided hikes, the visitors of information centres and exhibitions, the participants in events and student groups.

The most recent figures available are from 2008:

- 2,042 excursions and guided hikes with 31,966 participants
-  353 groups from abroad
-  152 holiday camps for young people
-  352,400 visitors in the information centres  

In an opinion poll conducted by the Austrian Gallup institute, the national parks achieve excellent ratings for their diverse programmes, the quality of the guided tours and the experience of nature. The employees of the national parks, who carry out the excursions and guided hikes, are praised for their expertise and skills. Altogether, three quarters of the persons consulted got a very good overall impression during their visit; 40 percent said that their expectations had even been exceeded. About 99 percent enjoyed their visit so much that they plan to visit a national park again. A further step of improvement towards better accessibility with public means of transportation is desirable.
