Hohe Tauern National Park
In the border area between the Federal Provinces of Carinthia, Salzburg and the Tyrol there is the largest national parks of the Alps. It includes the mightiest peaks of Austria, the biggest glacier of the Eastern Alps, and the most imposing waterfalls of Europe. The Hohe Tauern National Park is an oasis of silence and recreation but also an experience of a special kind for the nature-oriented visitor.
The Hohe Tauern National Park is rich in clear waters that form a network of lifelines and supply the more than 10,000 different animal species in the 1,815 km² of park area. The Hohe Tauern National Park is therefore justly called the water palace of the Alps. Its huge variety of vegetation areas and climatic zones has produced a wealth of life that could not have developed anywhere else but in the Hohe Tauern mountains. In the national park, the laws of nature and cultivated landscapes merge into an intact environment for flora, fauna and man alike. In the core zone, nature can develop without any disturbance from human intervention. In the buffer zone of the national park there is a harmonious coexistence of sustainable human management and a diverse cultivated landscape. There are many paths and open alpine huts that invite the visitor to experience the unique world of the Hohe Tauern National Park alone or in the company of trained national park staff.
